Gobble gobble.

I know, I know...I've been neglecting my blog.  I'm in a funk.  Part of it is Jake being gone but I have come to realize I could adapt to him being gone for something good, like going away to college.  I'd miss him, yes, but I would be fine with it.  It's him being gone and doing something I don't approve of that is just wearing me out.  And that?  Caused me to apologize to Miss Arse this morning for everything I put her through at his age.  She?  Was her ever-gracious self and said it was about damn time I apologized.  I love her.  I hope I'm just like her if I make it to 81. I'm working on it...I went to Walmart today and got four of their 40-cent-a-pound turkeys at just shy of 15 pounds each.  This required two trips through the checkouts since they are limit two.  I figured two for my freezer and two for hers, one of which would be Thanksgiving dinner.  I think I am all devious, slipping into her utility room to put them in her freezer to surprise her...I open her freezer and there?  Are two turkeys.  I go get her, cracking up, and find out she's done *exactly the same thing at a different Walmart and that I, too, already have two turkeys in my freezer.  So, we now have close to 120 pounds of turkey between us.  That's just ridiculous so we're going to find a four people or families in the neighborhood who could use a little help and surprise them with a turkey and some basic trimmings.  We figure we'll drop everything on doorsteps around 5am the Monday before and run.  What fun...I've always wanted to do this!  But can someone help me and my bacteria-fearing ways?  Will a frozen turkey be okay at outside air temp (60-ish) for 2-3 hours?  I don't want them to be really thawed in case people want to put them back in a freezer and save them for Christmas.  Any thoughts or ideas?

I am of no help to you in regards to the turkey thaw question. I just want to say that you are so very thoughtful, so great of you to donate to neighbors. I'm currently looking for local shelter or church for my teens and I to volunteer for Thanksgiving.

Oh that is so fun! My mom and I are like that too - some sort of telepathy thing going on.

Could you put the turkey in one of those styrofoam coolers filled with ice, and a label on it?

I think the cooler idea is good, but if my door bell rang and there was a load of food on the step I'd be a little skeeved out if I didn't know where it came from, you know? That said, I'd still eat it cuz it's going to get get cooked.

Wow AP! That is just the best blog entry I've read in awhile. You made my heart smile.

cupcake, that's such a nice thing to do!

Rebecca, I never thought of using a little cooler...I guess we could but, to be honest, since this wasn't a planned thing I'd prefer not putting more money into it if I can avoid it. We figured an a couple of hours before people leave for school and work should still be safe and they'd find it when they left the house. I'm just second-guessing even that much time out in the air, though.

Kathleen, we aren't going to ring the bell. We can't run *that fast. ;-) And everything will be factory sealed, the turkey being the only thing that requires refrigeration and it'll shrink-wrapped and frozen. That would still bother you? Hmmm. I don't want anyone to be concerned.
And thanks, Dawn. :-)

That's such a nice idea, and it will give you such satisfaction. I admit to playing kind of loosey-goosey with frozen food, but I'd think the turkey will be just fine. In 2 or 3 hours it will just barely be starting to thaw, anyway, and perfectly safe to throw back in the freezer, even.

This is such a great idea. I am glad you are doing it during the day...was picturing you and Miss Arse sneaking around in the dead of night! You have a good heart.

You two rock. And now I have a goofy smile on my face. I think 2 to 3 hours will be just fine. I think it takes like a week to thaw a turkey that big in a fridge.

I was going to suggest ringing the bell and running, but you already ruled that out. I would think it would be okay. What a lovely thing for you and your mother to do!

You are one cool chick! I would just love to see the faces of your neighbors when they open their doors. Actually, I'd rather see you and Miss Arse running down the street with four turkeys.

You two DO rock! What a great idea and I'm jealous of you for having such a terrific mom!

If you DO decide on the cooler thing, those styrofoam (they're almost disposable) coolers only cost a couple of dollars. But I think the turkeys will be just fine for a couple of hours. Better make sure the neighbors haven't gone out of town or something though!

Such a great post. I can just see you and Miss Arse trying to ninja those turkeys down the street quietly, in the pale light of sunrise, with J watching, laughing, and taking pictures! Miss Arse does rock, but so do you!
